Physiotherapy vs Sports Physiotherapy: What's the difference?
February 1, 2016
You know that Craven SPORT services provides physiotherapy for any clients, including those that have suffered from injuries related to accidents or motor vehicle collisions.
You also know that Craven provides what is referred to as sports physiotherapy. That may seem to make sense - after all, sports related injuries are different than accident related injuries.
What you may not know if that there is a difference not only in the type of service, but also in the type of training and expertise between a physiotherapist and a certified sports physiotherapist.
What is Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapists are trained to help their clients retain or maximize their range of movement. We often work with people that have limited mobility due to injury or strain, but we can work with anyone that feels their mobility is impaired.
Physiotherapists can help with a range of chronic pain and stress as well. Our work is both rehabilitative and preventative and can help clients deal with arthritis, back pain, concussion, chronic pain, concussion treatment and management, and other chronic pain and mobility issues.
However, physiotherapists can also assist with mobility issues related to illness or disease, including cancer, asthma, cardiovascular conditions, dimentia and diabetes to name a few.
Our physiotherapists are happy to answer any questions you may have about treatments and conditions, but if you'd like to access some in depth research, you can start with this PDF document from the Canadian Physiotherapy Association.
What is Sports Physiotherapy?
A ‘Sport Physiotherapist’ is a Physiotherapist who has completed the Certificate or Diploma in Sport Physiotherapy through Sport Physiotherapy Canada (a Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association).
Sports Physio is like a professional designation for Physiotherapists that allows them to work with athletes at all levels. The Clinic Specialist in Sport program that sports physiotherapists attend includes education on specialized treatments such as athletic taping, protective equipment, concussion management and exercise prescription.
Sport physiotherapists gain clinical and field expertise through Sport Physiotherapy Canada in order to work with clients of all ages that have suffered injury or have limited mobility due to strain, overuse and sport or fitness related injury or trauma.
