The Benefits of Physiotherapy during and after Pregnancy

We all know that pregnancy comes with a lot of changes to a woman’s body. From centre of gravity changes, more pressure on organs, not to mention the increase of weight to be carried. South City Physiotherapy in Ontario says that two thirds of pregnant women experience back pain, one fifth experience pelvic pain and over 40% experience urinary incontinence in their first pregnancy. Though this is only for a relatively short amount of time, the increase in pain can seem unbearable at times.

This is where physiotherapy can help. “The main aim of physiotherapy [during pregnancy] is to reduce discomfort, to prepare the body for delivery and to speed-up recovery after childbirth” (The Health Site). In this case, a physiotherapist would assess the patient and build exercises that meet their individual needs. These exercises can include strengthening muscles, decreasing joint pain, correcting muscle imbalances, and increasing overall range of motion of the body.

Physiotherapy can also assist in the area of urinary incontinence (unable to contain or retain urine) due to pelvic floor weakness. The Health Site describes it as, “Progesterone, which is known as the pregnancy hormone, relaxes the muscles of the pelvic floor in order for it to be supple and ready for delivery. Therefore, these muscles can weaken and strain during pregnancy and childbirth, which leads to urinary incontinence and pelvic floor dysfunction.” Physiotherapy can help strengthen the pelvic floor muscles which can also help reduce muscle weakness that can occur after childbirth.
