Why Ice Doesn't Help An Injury

Maclean's came out with an interesting article a few years back on the misconceptions of ice and injury.

A certified physiologist said it best: "It’s almost a knee-jerk reaction. Something happens. Put ice on it immediately,” But he went against his instinct [when he hurt his ankle] and thought to try something he’d read in [Doug] Hartzell’s book [Don’t Ice that Ankle Sprain]. He got out a stretch band, rigged it to his chin-up bar and started doing simple movements for his ankle. The next morning when he woke up, there was no pain or restriction in motion."
This new experiement for this physiologist started a movement in his own practice where instead of recommending Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation, he now recommends Movement, Elevation, Traction and Heat.
